A brief introduction of the shipping industry in Estonia, Finland and Latvia
Given the geography of Estonia, Finland and Latvia shipping has quite naturally a vital role for most of the economic activities in these countries. As an example in Finland more than 80% of goods are transported by sea. In Estonia, Finland and Latvia there are various companies operating in passenger and freight transportation. This sector has become more and more international as the ownerships of shipping companies have changed and vessels do not necessarily sail under Estonian, Finnish or Latvian flags anymore.
Because of the weather and nautical conditions of the Baltic Sea the shipping industry relies on public services such as ice breaking and pilot services.
